Strategies for Career Advancement

The Boston-wide Women of Color (WOC) Initiative grew out of a Northeastern University grant written by Nicole N. Aljoe, Associate Professor of English & African American Studies and Undergraduate Program Director in the Department of English, and Barbara Guthrie, Professor of Nursing and Associate Dean of Graduate Studies in Bouvé College of Health Sciences in 2017.

Its first public project was a conference titled Women of Color in the Academy: Building Strategies for Career Advancement – The Time is Now on February 10, 2017.  Out of that very positive experience a group of faculty and staff formed a Boston-wide Women of Color Advisory Committee, which meet monthly to plan on-going initiatives.  The Committee is composed of faculty and staff from Northeastern University, Boston University, Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health, University of Massachusetts Boston, Tufts University, and MIT.  The initiatives include an annual conference, quarterly soirees/gatherings, film screenings and community discussions and the creation of online spaces to connect WOC faculty. The ADVANCE Office of Faculty Development at Northeastern provides administrative support and infrastructure for Women of Color in the Academy initiatives.
